Boy, did this post bring back long buried memories of some of my own personal humiliations growing up with a emotionally challenged single parent!

In the last 15+ years some things about Girls' Camp have changed while others are still the same. Prom dresses at camp? What do prom dress have to do with camp certification? Popular girls verus the unpopular girls? The tradition continues.

You're right. It seems bizarre to me the number of people who believe that suicide is a "personal choice," as if the act of suicide only hurts the decedent. When you try to discuss your position with them, they immediately leap to the euthanasia argument. "How would you like it if you were hooked to a machine . . ." as if that justifies completely their position on suicide.
Even if we accept a non-religious point-of-view, and argue that some people simply have depressing, terrible lives, suicide is still a gamble against the future. After all, how does the suicide know that, even as their raising the gun, the check isn't already in the mail?
Thanks for your comment.

Very good essay. It reminds me of an experience I had in a college course some time back (maybe a year). The topic of suicide came up and there was some discussion of whether or not suicide should be permitted (or considered "ok" in certain circumstances). Of that class of 20 or 30 young college students I stood alone as being opposed to the idea completely. The overwhelming attitude was that some people's lives just suck so bad that if they feel like giving up we ought to let them. They asked for the reasoning behind my opposition. All I could think to tell them was that we have to some hope that life be better. Your essay makes the point much better. I think they would reconsider their opnions if they read it.
Of course, in an a seperate matter, being a good deal smarter than my peers I felt smug in thinking that I had gone beyond their calculated reasoning.
